Papers, awards and group updates

2026

  1. Demo

Demonstrating Samsara: A Super-Optimizer for Multimodal Stream Processing at VLDB 2026

A live demo of Samsara, the multimodal stream processing prototype introduced in our EDBT 2026 vision paper.

  2. Workshop

Co-organized the aiDM workshop at SIGMOD 2026

Program chair for the Ninth International Workshop on Exploiting Artificial Intelligence Techniques for Data Management, co-located with ACM SIGMOD/PODS 2026 in Bengaluru, India.

  3. Paper

EcoLLM: Energy-Aware Benchmarking of LLMs for Data Processing Workloads at aiDM@SIGMOD 2026

A workload-centric benchmark for studying the energy-aware trade-offs of LLMs in data-processing tasks, showing that energy efficiency and task effectiveness are not aligned.

  4. Appointment

Joined Ruhr-Universität Bochum as Junior Professor of Databases and Information Systems

I am building a research group on next-generation data systems that combine classical data system principles with modern AI techniques. Openings for PhD students and student assistants will be announced here.

  5. Paper

Towards Multimodal Stream Processing Systems presented at EDBT 2026

A vision for streaming systems that treat multimodal LLMs as first-class operators, so queries can run in real time over text, images, audio and sensor data together.

  6. Paper

IMPACT: Integrated Multimodal Pipeline for Rapid Accident Causality Tracking (Student Abstract) at AAAI 2026

A scalable framework for rapid traffic incident analysis over existing CCTV infrastructure, pairing real-time key-frame filtering with multimodal LLM causal reasoning.

2025

  1. Papers

Two papers on learned cost models in PVLDB Volume 18

Opening the Black-Box: Explaining Learned Cost Models for Databases brings explainability techniques to learned cost models, and Learned Cost Models for Query Optimization: From Batch to Streaming Systems carries them over to streaming workloads.

  2. Paper

How Good are Learned Cost Models, Really? published at SIGMOD 2025

A study of learned cost models on the query optimization tasks they are meant to support, rather than on estimation accuracy alone.

  3. Paper

    Dema presented at EDBT 2025

Decentralized window aggregation for non-decomposable quantile functions, cutting the network overhead of centralized aggregation in IoT networks.

  4. Award

Named an Athene Young Investigator at TU Darmstadt

The programme supports early-career researchers in leading their own junior research group.

2024

  1. Paper

    PDSP-Bench presented at TPCTC 2024

A benchmarking system for parallel and distributed stream processing, built to make performance results across systems and placements comparable.

  2. Papers

Two papers at IEEE ICDE 2024

ZEROTUNE learns zero-shot cost models for parallelism tuning in stream processing, and COSTREAM predicts operator placement costs in edge-cloud environments.
